  • Primary Signal: Set Piece Delivery Zones: Where the Best Corner and Free Kick Deliveries Actually Land
  • Overview: Not all deliveries are equal: the zone a set piece lands in decides its danger. This set-piece lab maps the key zones and what makes each one effective....

Set-piece delivery zones are the specific areas of the penalty box where corners and free kicks are aimed, and understanding them transforms how you judge set-piece quality. A delivery is not simply good or bad; it is good because it lands in a zone where attackers can attack it at speed while defenders struggle to clear it. The best set-piece teams design deliveries for specific zones, with runners timed to arrive as the ball does, rather than simply hitting the ball into a crowded area and hoping.

The near-post zone is the most aggressive delivery area. A ball whipped to the near post at pace is difficult for defenders to clear, because any touch risks deflecting it into the goal, and it allows a near-post runner to flick the ball on toward the far post. Near-post deliveries require precise timing, since the runner must arrive as the ball does, and they are vulnerable to a goalkeeper who claims the cross. But when the timing is right, near-post corners produce some of the highest-quality chances in football.

The penalty-spot zone, roughly six to twelve yards from goal, is the classic delivery area for direct corners. Balls landing here can be attacked by runners arriving from deep, who meet the ball with momentum while defenders jump from standing starts. The penalty-spot zone suits teams with strong aerial players and good delivery, because the ball must be accurate enough to find a runner among a crowd. It is also the zone where goalkeepers are most likely to intervene, so delivery height matters: too high and the keeper claims it, too flat and defenders clear it.

The far-post zone rewards patience and accuracy. A deep delivery to the far post bypasses the congested central area and finds attackers arriving late, often unmarked because defenders have drifted toward the ball. Far-post deliveries are particularly effective against zonal marking systems, where the far-post zone may be covered by a single defender or left to the goalkeeper. The trade-off is distance: a far-post delivery must travel further, giving defenders more time to react, so it requires exceptional delivery quality.

The edge-of-the-box zone has grown in importance as teams have improved at defending the six-yard box. Instead of aiming into the crowd, the taker plays a shorter delivery to a teammate waiting outside the area, who can shoot first-time or deliver a second cross. This zone exploits the space that defences leave when they pack the box, and it is especially effective when the edge player is a strong long-range shooter. Opponents have responded by stationing defenders on the edge, which in turn opens space inside the box, creating a tactical cat-and-mouse game.

Delivery selection should match the players available. A team with a dominant aerial striker should target the penalty-spot zone, while a team with fast, clever runners should favour the near post. A team with a dead-ball specialist capable of bending the ball to the far post should exploit that skill rather than forcing generic deliveries. The best set-piece coaches build a menu of deliveries, each aimed at a specific zone, and choose between them based on the opponent's defensive system and the players on the pitch.

For set-piece analysts, delivery zones offer a structured way to evaluate what is often judged impressionistically. Track where each delivery lands, whether a teammate attacked it, and what the outcome was, and patterns emerge quickly: a team may deliver well to the near post but never to the far post, or may waste excellent deliveries with poorly timed runs. Set pieces are not luck; they are geometry, timing, and delivery, and the zone map is the key to understanding all three.
